Overview
The information in this article will help healthcare providers provide culturally sensitive care to Amish patients.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Today’s Amish community is thriving, with a population that has more than doubled in the past 20 years to 308,000 and is expected to continue to grow. Amish acceptance of modern medicine varies widely. Some Amish people have a family physician or nurse practitioner and regularly seek standard medical treatment, while other families avoid seeking help from the medical establishment unless the situation is dire. This course will help healthcare providers provide culturally sensitive care to Amish individuals and other members of the Plain community.
The goal of this course is to provide nurses and health educators in multiple healthcare settings with an overview of the values of the Amish culture to allow them to develop trusting relationships with Amish individuals who choose to seek professional medical help outside their community.
- Explain three strategies for providing culturally sensitive care to Amish individuals and their families.
- Name two common health practices that the Amish communities use.
