The purpose of this 10-module course is to help prepare nurses to pass the ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Board Certification Exam. The goal of this module is to provide psychiatric nurses with information about the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Standards of Performance and Practice, the DSM-5, elements of common psychiatric assessment and rating scales, effective interviewing skills, and patient privacy issues that are specific to psychiatric patients and settings.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss each of the ANA’s 16 professional standards and 5 principles of ethical nursing care.
  • Explain key elements of a mental status assessment.
  • Describe techniques that enhance therapeutic communication and the therapeutic relationship.
  • Identify risk factors and necessary nursing interventions for violence to self or others.
