- Describe principles for the use of radiation and contrast in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
Goals and Learning Outcomes
This course explores two areas of procedural care for cardiac catheterization that are accompanied by a degree of risk: radiation exposure and intravascular contrast use. Both are necessary to generate images that are essential components of catheterization procedures. This course explores basic radiation concepts and techniques for minimizing risks associated with exposure to radiation by patients and cath lab professionals. The use of contrast agents, the risk of kidney dysfunction, special clinical situations, and risk mitigation techniques for contrast use are also explained.
