Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes

Although great strides have been made to reduce surgical site infections (SSIs) in the United States, SSIs remain a considerable cause of morbidity, increased length of hospital stays, and mortality. SSI is the costliest type of hospital-associated infection (HAI), at a cost of at least $3.3 billion annually, and may account for nearly a million additional inpatient hospital days per year (NHSN, 2021). The goal of this course is to provide perioperative clinicians with information to prevent surgical site infections.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify surgical site infections by primary vs. secondary and superficial vs. deep
  • List three risk factors for surgical site infections
  • Describe three ways perioperative professionals can help prevent surgical site infections
