The purpose of this course is to inform nurses about the potential dangers of restraints and ways to reduce their use. The course includes an overview of regulations and standards of care for the use of restraints but emphasizes alternatives.

The goal of this course is to inform nurses in acute care about physical restraints.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Name six physical and psychological risks of using physical restraints.
  • Identify a restraint in healthcare.
  • Name eight alternatives to restraints.
  • Explain the regulations for restraints for the management of violent or self-destructive behavior that jeopardizes the immediate physical safety of the patient, staff, or others in hospitals.
  • Describe the regulations for monitoring a person who is restrained and in seclusion.
