Overview
Stroke is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S. About 795,000 people in the U.S. will have a stroke this year. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a leading cause of severe, long-term disability. This course provides healthcare professionals with information about the etiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and pharmacological management of acute ischemic stroke, including stroke complicating cardiac catheterization. It also discusses the evaluation process for recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in acute ischemic stroke and pharmacological management of acute ischemic stroke.

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide nurses and physical therapists with information about the etiology, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and pharmacological management of acute ischemic stroke, including stroke complicating cardiac catheterization. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify two causes of acute ischemic stroke
  • Describe the evaluation process for recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in acute ischemic stroke
  • Discuss the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke
