Overview
The practices of body arts — tattoos and piercings — have become so common that all healthcare professionals are urged to understand their medical impact. Knowledge of the health risks engendered in tattooing and body piercing practices will better equip healthcare professionals to address medical problems arising from these body arts, as well as recognize the contraindications when patients present for imaging studies such as general radiography, CT, and MRI.

This tattoos, piercings, and healthcare issues continuing education program will inform radiologic technologists, EMTs and paramedics, laboratory professionals, and nurses about the precautions they should take when dealing with patients with tattoos or body piercings. On completion of this education module the reader will be able to:
  • Describe the various types of body arts used by individuals
  • Explain the danger posed when imaging patients with body arts
  • Recognize the possible complications of body arts
