This module will provide information that will prepare the trauma nurse to successfully answer questions related to thoracic trauma.

Trauma to the thoracic cavity accounts for 20 to 25% of all traumas around the world. In fact, thoracic trauma is the third leading cause of traumatic deaths. Only head injuries and abdominal injuries cause more deaths than trauma to the thorax. This high mortality rate is reflected on the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) exam, and test-takers can anticipate a large number of chest-trauma questions. This module will provide information that will prepare the trauma nurse to successfully answer questions related to thoracic trauma.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify assessment principles for patients with known or suspected thoracic trauma.
  • Name at least three common thoracic trauma injuries.
  • Recognize appropriate treatments and interventions for various thoracic injuries.
