The goal of this continuing education program is to update nurses’ ability to care for patients with pancreatitis.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Pancreatitis can affect anyone at any age. More than 200,000 people in the U.S. are admitted to the hospital each year with acute pancreatitis. It can cause critical illness, and in the acute stages, it may even be fatal. Nurses in every practice setting - from the ED to medical/surgical and critical care units to patients‘ homes - need to be familiar with the identification and management of this disease. Nurses should be able to identify the classic signs and symptoms of chronic and acute pancreatitis, underlying pathophysiology, usual treatment, and the steps to follow to achieve adequate pain control.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • List two causes and two complications of acute and chronic pancreatitis
  • Describe the typical presentation of a patient with acute pancreatitis
  • Differentiate between the pain management of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis
