Goals and Learning Outcomes
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive motor neuron disease. It involves degeneration in the upper and lower motor neurons that control voluntary movement, causing muscle atrophy over time. Most patients diagnosed with ALS have an average life expectancy of less than 5 years with very few surviving more than 10 years (DynaMed, 2022; Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2022).
