Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes

Traditionally, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) focused solely on ensuring the return of spontaneous circulation with medications and electrical defibrillation. It did not focus on the long-term effects of cardiac arrest, such as the actions of free radicals and nitric oxide on the brain that contribute to ongoing nervous system degeneration. But in 2003, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommended a therapy that has come to be known as therapeutic hypothermia (TH), to reduce a patient’s core body temperature, which minimizes the harmful effects of hypoxia on the central nervous system (CNS).

The goal of this course is to equip nurses with knowledge of the history, indications for use, and possible future uses of therapeutic hypothermia, as well as nursing care for patients undergoing this process.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain indications for therapeutic hypothermia
  • Describe care of the patient who is undergoing therapeutic hypothermia
  • Discuss the process of initiating and terminating therapeutic hypothermia
  • Explain indications and contraindications for therapeutic hypothermia.
  • Describe care of patients undergoing therapeutic hypothermia.
  • Discuss the process of initiating, maintaining, and discontinuing therapeutic hypothermia
