Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Trauma patients are at increased risk for hypothermia, which in turn increases their mortality risk. Nurses caring for these patients must be well-informed about hypothermia so that they may intervene appropriately. This module will explore the risk factors and effects of hypothermia on the traumatically injured patient and examine the nurse’s role in recognizing, preventing, and treating this potentially deadly condition. The goal of this course is to introduce the physiological effects of hypothermia in the critically injured trauma patient and to provide rewarming strategies to be used during trauma resuscitation.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Define hypothermia as it relates to the critically injured trauma patient
  • List at least four negative physiological effects of hypothermia on the critically injured trauma patient
  • Name at least four strategies to prevent or treat hypothermia in the critically injured trauma patient
