The goal of this course is to describe the principles of asepsis for nurses and laboratorians in healthcare facilities and clinical and research laboratories.
 
 
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Define asepsis, aseptic techniques, and the difference between asepsis in the clinical setting vs. the laboratory.
  • Describe the different types of hospital-acquired infections and how they can be prevented.

It is the responsibility of healthcare facilities and laboratories to assure that patients are protected from the spread of infections and that laboratory results for these patients are accurate and not impaired by the contamination of specimens and/or reagents. Additionally, there is a responsibility to assure that healthcare and laboratory employees are protected from the transmission of infections from patients and their specimens.
