Overview
Although energy balance may seem a simple concept, long-term health requires actively managing both sides of the energy balance equation. This includes understanding the body's energy needs, including the impact of physical activity, and gaining knowledge about the calorie content of foods and beverages. This webinar will discuss the basics of energy balance as well as learning behaviors like portion control and calorie budgeting to help patients manage energy intake.

Goals and Learning Outcomes
The goal of this presentation is to explain the basic principles of energy balance and to show how these principles can be used in clinical practice to help people avoid or reduce obesity. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the basic principle of how the body achieves a balance between energy intake and energy expenditure
  • Describe the complex interactions among component of energy balance – energy intake, energy expenditure, energy stores.
  • Show how an understanding of energy balance can point us toward effective strategies to reduce obesity
