Psoriasis Management and Support

Psoriasis is a chronic disorder of the skin and joints that causes inflammation and scaling. In addition to its physical effects, psoriasis impacts patients socially and psychologically. Approximately 7.5 million adults in the U.S. have psoriasis (Amercian Academy of Dermatology [AAD], n.d.). Healthcare providers (HCPs) should be able to identify psoriasis, properly assess patients diagnosed with psoriasis for disease severity and comorbidities, and treat or refer patients to specialty providers accordingly.

Because of the anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties of glucocorticoids, they are among the most widely prescribed classes of drugs in the world. This module discusses the use of glucocorticoids and three infectious diseases that may occur in patients using these medications for an extended time: pneumocystis pneumonia, nocardiosis, and strongyloidiasis. Glucocorticoid therapy is associated with several toxicities -- including immune suppression -- that may lead to the development of certain infections. This program informs nurses of the use of glucocorticoids and their adverse effects.

The Nose Knows: Insights Into Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis (AR) affects an estimated 50 million people in the United States (> 16% of the population annually) and costs more than 18 billion each year. Allergic rhinitis is the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis in children is increasing and is a common cause of nasal congestion in children. The burden of allergic rhinitis is substantial and a significant cause of widespread morbidity, medical treatment costs, decreased quality of life (QOL), reduced work productivity, and lost school days. Surveys have found that AR is an independent risk factor for the development of asthma. In the United States, 38% of patients with AR have asthma, and up to 78% of asthma patients have AR. This course will update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of allergic rhinitis and its implications for related comorbid allergic airway disease.

Rattlesnake Bite
Rattlesnake bites are uncommon in the United States. The incidence of rattlesnake bites is not known, and the published numbers are estimates and almost certainly low; many rattlesnake bites are not reported, poison control centers are not consulted for every case, and there are probably many people who are bitten who do not seek medical attention. Death from a rattlesnake bite is rare, but victims can suffer significant toxic effects, loss of function, disfigurement, or even amputation. Most of these consequences can be linked to inappropriate treatment, delay in seeking appropriate help, or inaccessible medical care. Misconceptions about the proper treatment of these emergencies abound. Healthcare professionals as a team need to monitor snakebite victims closely, even when they appear to be out of danger, and use the expertise available from local poison control centers.
