Lung Cancer Risks in Women

Lung cancer kills more women than breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer combined, but is rarely perceived as a women’s health issue. While it would be simple to attribute the rising numbers to increases in smoking among younger women, increasing numbers of women who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer. Emerging evidence now suggests genetics, biology, and hormones may contribute to women's increased incidence of lung cancer.

Nurses and other healthcare professionals are responsible for increasing awareness of risk factors and prevention strategies to address the rise in lung cancer among women. You should aggressively promote smoking cessation, encourage screening for patients identified as high risk, and advocate for additional funding for lung cancer research.

Management of Oral Chemotherapy
Cancer treatment places physical, emotional, and financial burdens on patients and their families. Patient outcomes for oral therapy depend on effective patient education about adherence to the prescribed regimen, management of treatment-related symptoms, and ongoing follow-up. This course provides nurses, pharmacists, and providers with an evidence-based overview of the barriers to effective medication adherence and strategies for managing patients receiving oral chemotherapy. By providing high-quality and frequent education, clinicians help patients receive the greatest benefits from their therapy.

Tobacco Use in Adolescents

Cigarette smoking has declined, but tobacco alternatives like electronic cigarettes have gained popularity among adolescents. The use of tobacco in any form has severe health implications during the adolescent development because they are more susceptible to addiction, making them prone to becoming lifelong users of tobacco. Although healthcare providers are uniquely positioned to ask about tobacco use and provide evidence-based treatments, it is not consistently performed at each visit. This course will review how adolescents are more susceptible to the marketing of tobacco products, and the health consequences of nicotine addiction, and will provide techniques for encouraging a tobacco-free lifestyle.

An Update on Cancer

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the U.S. behind heart disease (Siegel et al., 2022). The exact number of new cancer diagnoses is unknown for several reasons, including incomplete cancer registration data for some states and a lag in available statistics, but the American Cancer Society (ACS) projected that more than 1,918,030 new cancer cases would occur in the U.S. in 2022 (Siegel et al., 2022). According to the ACS, about 609,360 patients will die from cancer in the U.S. in 2022 (Siegel et al., 2022). The National Cancer Institute (NCI) reports the most common cancers were breast, lung and bronchus, prostate, and colorectal cancers (NCI, 2020). The rates of mortality for common cancer types showed a decline between 2015 and 2019 (NCI, 2021a). About 80% of cancers diagnosed in the U.S. occur in patients over the age of 55 (American Cancer Society, 2022c).

Risk Factors and Treatment Options for Bladder Cancer

Most bladder cancers occur in people older than 55 years, with 73 being the average age of diagnosis. During the past 20 years, the incidence of bladder cancer (BC) has declined, but men continue to be 3 to 4 times more likely to develop bladder cancer than women. Incidence of BC is diagnosed more often in White people than in Black people or Hispanic Americans (American Cancer Society, 2022).

Do college courses count as CEUs for nurses?

Yes, college courses can count as CEUs for nurses, but specific conditions must be met. It's essential for nurses to verify with their state licensing board to ensure that the specific college courses they plan to take will be recognized as CEUs. Different states may have varying requirements regarding what counts as acceptable continuing education.

How many contact hours are needed to become an RN?

The number of contact hours required to become and remain a Registered Nurse (RN) varies by state and specific licensing boards. Find the CE requirements for your state here: Nurse CE Requirements by State
