A Nurse Practitioner, certified under section 6910 of the New York State Education Law is a licensed registered nurse who provides primary health care in accordance with written policies approved by nursing/medical administration. Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice and advocates for patients and supports patient rights. In the area of clinical expertise of the psychiatric patient, he/she assumes clinical, educational research and performance improvement responsibilities for implementing the nursing process within the framework and philosophy of the department of Nursing.
Develops and implements a collaborative practice agreement in the specific clinical area and performs a periodic review of the collaborative practice agreement.
2.* Assesses the health status of clients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examinations.
3.* Initiates therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examinations. Interprets findings and alters plan of care including, but not limited to, prescribing and altering medication regimens and ordering blood according to agreed-upon collaborative practice agreement and designated protocols in designated area.
4.* Provides teaching and counseling in areas of health promotion and maintenance and in disease prevention; coordinates patient education in a manner consistent with patients’ biopsychosocial profile.
5. Documents findings and plan of care in patient’s medical record
6.* Consults with physician as established in the collaborative practice agreement.
7.* Initiates referrals to specialty services and fosters continuity of care.
8.* Initiates hospital admission and discharge after collaborative consultation with physician.
10.* Patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledge of patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patients served.

18.* Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary committees which influence and/or determine policies affecting nursing practice.
Collaborative Physician Agreement
19.* Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with agreement between Nurse Practitioner and collaborating physician with endorsement by Vice President, Hospital Operations and Chairman of the department.
20.* Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
