It’s Just a Stage 1 Pressure Injury. Or is it?

Under pressure: just a blanchable event or an underlying injury? It can be much more difficult to distinguish a deeper tissue injury from a stage 1 injury when assessing darker skin tones versus very light skin tones. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel modified descriptive language from pressure ulcer to pressure injury in 2016. Since skin can look very different based on an individual’s skin tone, it’s important to fortify assessment skills with tips you can use to help prevent “missed” deeper injuries.

Melanoma: Dangerous Cancer on the Rise
For the past 30 years, the incidence of melanoma has increased steadily. In adults older than age 50, the death rate has remained stable from 2005 to 2014, but for younger people, there was a 2.6% decrease in the death rate. Early detection and new treatments have improved survival rates. In 2017, the five-year survival rate for localized melanoma was 98%. This module discusses melanoma, screening recommendations, risk factors, prevention strategies, diagnostics, staging, and treatment.

Knife and Gun Injuries

Penetrating trauma involves wounding instruments that penetrate the skin and directly injure body tissue. Although there are numerous examples of penetrating trauma — such as a child falling on a pencil that penetrates the globe of the eye or a piece of shrapnel from an explosive device tearing through a limb — two obvious causes of penetrating trauma are firearm wounds and stabbings. This module discusses the mechanism of injury involved in firearm injuries and stab wounds. The healthcare providers should have a baseline understanding of the mechanisms of injury surrounding this form of trauma.
