Regulation of Body Weight
Obesity is a global health concern associated with a number of acute and chronic health problems. Losing a modest percentage of body weight can decrease risk for chronic diseases. Unfortunately, losing weight is not easy; keeping it off is even more difficult. To lose weight, a negative energy balance is needed, which the body interprets as a sign to increase food intake. This course will examine the complex nature of energy balance that is critical for successful weight loss and maintenance of that loss. It is crucial to understand the role of fat tissue and how it plays a role in determining hunger and satiety; the role of genetics in body fat distribution and body weight regulation; communication networks among the brain, hormones, peptides, organs, and tissues; gut microbes; and other components of the body involved in regulating hunger and weight.

When the Nose No Longer Knows: Smell and Taste Disorders
Although smell and taste disorders in older people are often not directly life-threatening, they can have a major impact on quality of life. More worrisome, they often lead to weight loss and even malnutrition. Loss of smell and taste can create dangerous health risks when someone cannot recognize the odor of gas leaks, smoke, or spoiled food. Although these disorders can arise simply from the physiological changes of aging, they can also indicate other more serious medical problems. Healthcare professionals can improve an elder’s quality of life by performing a careful assessment to identify the cause of the smell and taste disorders and by assisting them with ways to cope with the problem.

STDs are a serious problem in the United States. Each year, nearly 20 million Americans, half of them between the ages of 15 and 24, become infected with an STD. The highest rate of infection is among female adolescents. The long-lasting health effects for young people are particularly serious. Consequences of untreated STDs may include infertility, brain and other organ damage, and an increased susceptibility to HIV. Sexually active people need the correct information on preventing STDs so that they can make informed decisions about their sexual activity. All healthcare providers who are knowledgeable about STDs can help provide that information. This course describes common STDs and their treatment.

BPH — A Growing Problem for Men

With age, most men experience prostate enlargement, a progressive condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). More than half of men between the ages of 51 and 60 and up to 90% of men older than age 80 have BPH symptoms. The exact cause of BPH is not known. While BPH isn't cancer, it can cause problems, including urinary tract infections and kidney and bladder dysfunction. Men with BPH also may experience urinary hesitancy, urinary frequency, nocturia, dysuria, urine leakage, straining or pushing to begin urination, a weak urine stream, and dribbling at the end of urination. Men with BPH often have erectile dysfunction, have coronary heart disease, and are at a greater risk for major adverse cardiac events. This course will increase nurses' knowledge about BPH: the pathophysiology, medical and surgical treatment options, and the nurse's role in patient education.

Low-Calorie Sweeteners: Moving Beyond the Myths

Low-calorie sweeteners and controversy seem to go hand in hand, with some members of the media continually fueling concerns about their safety and lack of efficacy by widely broadcasting negative studies and staying tight lipped on positive results. A small but growing number of low calorie sweeteners are approved for use by regulatory bodies around the globe, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Approvals are based on numerous required safety studies with post market surveillance often a stipulation of approval. Regular reviews conducted by various regulatory agencies continue to demonstrate their safety. A growing body of evidence is demonstrating how low-calorie sweeteners, as part of an otherwise healthy eating plan, can be a tool to help people meet their health and nutrition objectives. Get an update on this evidence as well as a practical perspective on this topic.
